The New Guinea Binatang Research Center (BRC) is a local Papua New Guinea (PNG) non-profit organization that specializes in (1) tropical rainforest research , (2) training junior scientists, university postgraduate & undergraduate students, paraecologists, and (3) promote community conservation awareness. BRC started as a small research team in 1997 and has grown into a very good research station with over 20 staffs. BRC has a tradition of combining different levels of people with a best mix of local talents and international scientists in conducting some cutting-edge research projects. Most collaborators are from Czech Republic, USA, UK, Japan and Australia. BRC welcomes any interested collaborations from anywhere.
By global comparison PNG represents only 0.1% of the world population but holds 5% of the worlds species richness! This already makes PNG an interesting place for scientists. However, research opportunities and training is a great challenge for Papua New Guineans. BRC is one of the few biological research institutions in the country that runs several student training programs every year.
BRC runs 4 types of student training.
The students are expected to do exceptionally well. They will do research with international collaborations. Apart from students training, for more information on our work or for collaboration, please visit our website or contact us on the address:

- Tropical Ecology Course - this is a course in collaboration with BRC and the University of South Bohemia, Czech Republic. The course runs bi-annually and offers 10 positions for any interested PNG students or junior scientists. We publish in the local newspapers for interested persons to apply. After the course a certificate is given.
- Postgraduate Students - we offer Master of Philosophy (MPhil) positions at our center when we have enough funding. The positions are advertised in the local newspapers and on our Facebook page. It is very competitive and based on merit. We get many applicants across the country but we can offer not more than 5 positions per year. New recruitment of students depend on how fast our existing students graduate. So far we have graduated 15 postgraduate students - all with 100% job placement. Our postgraduate program is part of the University of Technology postgraduate program, where it confer the degree papers.
- Undergraduate Training- this is similar to work experience course, final year projects and semester courses offered by various local universities. At present we accept students from the University of PNG, University of Technology, University of Goroka, Pacific Adventist University and the PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment. The student's request should officially come from their schools, and upon that we ask the students to provide their CVs and a letter of interest. We run a short interview before final selections are made. We accept not more than 2 students per universities. The undergraduate students are supervised by our staffs both in the lab and in the field. After each training, the students are expected to give short seminar presentations and write up reports for assessment .
- Local Village Assistant Training/ Conservation Ranger Training - we invest in training our best most promising village assistants in basic computing, research techniques and discussions. This training helps them understand especially research protocols. They can easily monitor long term studies with limited supervision. Most of our village assistants are from the conservation areas, so by employing them, we provide constant employment, which is one of the benefits they deserve for conserving their forest. We also run ranger courses for conservation rangers accross PNG.
The students are expected to do exceptionally well. They will do research with international collaborations. Apart from students training, for more information on our work or for collaboration, please visit our website or contact us on the address:
